About Rise Layouts

The people behind Rise Layouts, how each article about Layout and design fundamentals for people learning to design is put together, and what we will not publish.

About this blog

Rise Layouts is a blog, and the line under the logo, Design and layout, explained clearly, is the whole editorial brief. New articles go up when they are ready, and everything we have published stays available in the blog archive.

Most of what is written about Layout and design fundamentals for people learning to design is written by people who have never had to live with the results. Rise Layouts is the opposite arrangement, and that is the whole idea behind it.

What we do not do

There are questions we routinely decline. Anything that depends on facts only you can see, and anything where being wrong would cost you real money on our say so.

About the name

People ask about the name. There is rarely a good story behind a domain, and there is not one here either. Rise Layouts was available, it was short enough to say out loud, and it has been the name long enough now that changing it would be more confusing than keeping it.

How we work

Each article answers one question about Layout and design fundamentals for people learning to design and then stops. Padding a page to look thorough is the easiest way to waste a reader's afternoon.

Nobody has editorial input except the people whose names are on the articles. That includes anyone who has ever sent us money.

The full process, including corrections and commercial links, is set out on the editorial policy page.

What is filed here

  • Layout Principles. The composition rules that make any design feel balanced and clear.
  • Web Design. Designing web pages that look good and guide the reader naturally.
  • Typography. Using type well, from choosing fonts to spacing and hierarchy.
  • Color. Choosing and combining colors that work together and communicate.

Each piece sits under exactly one heading. Readers arriving from search mostly land in layout principles, web design and typography, so those sections get looked after first.

The people

There is no house byline here. Each piece is signed, and each signature leads to everything else that person has put their name to.
